Random Acts of Planting - Day One at the Gardening Centre

I don't mean the hormonal one - I mean the passionate interest in gardening that wells up in a woman when she hits the big 5-0 or so.

I needed some hand-holding so I asked a popular garden centre - Holla's in Blezzard Valley - if I could volunteer there one day a week. "Sure, no problem," was Carole's response.

I arrived decked out in what I thought was gardening gear - bug jacket and hat, plaid shirt, light coloured paints, running shoes that were practically steel-toed, bug dope, and sunscreen. This accounts for why, last year, the sunflowers planted at the side of our home never showed up, and my begonias be-goned when I planted them in the full sun.

And I also learned the joy of hanging baskets. Carole picked me out a mini Garden of Eden in a 10 inch basket.

I showed him the newest addition to our garden green family. Planning to go "organic"? If yes, just go ahead! But if the answer is a "no", it is advisable to take the help of organic gardening centers.

Organic gardening centers are many, and the reasons why they are considered the best places to seek counsel are sketched below--

(1) When the weather is warm enough, organic gardening centers prefer to function out-of-doors. First, find someone who is involved with organic gardening and then ask that person to direct you to a center nearby.

(3) The local farmers' market that usually put out organic, as well as non-organic gardening products, may be accommodating organic gardening centers too.

(4) If you are a beginner, you will feel grateful to get helpful advice from people experienced in this type of gardening! Just consider what these centers can do for you--Whatever you need is all in one place and easily available. Well then, organic gardening centers can do something for you too! You just have to pick your products and make your way home. It is not even necessary to search for your products among many others, since the store caters only to organic gardens. Thus, you can return to your gardening work in peace!

So you have web sites functioning as organic gardening centers. (7) It should not be long before we get to see organic gardening centers everywhere, just as commonplace as hardware stores. This is because organic gardening is catching up in popularity. Garden centers seem to be as inevitable as gardening itself. There are active and useful centers in most sections of the United States. Rather famous ones are located in such cities as Cleveland, Chicago, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Wheeling, Detroit and Fort Worth. Other busy industrial centers are becoming so garden-minded that garden centers are bound to develop. Even New York, blasé and money-minded, is in the throes of a movement, which, it is hoped, will culminate in a real garden center where a full-time horticultural expert will be employed.

Victory Gardening has had much to do with the development of this idea. Tucked away in the green hills of western Massachusetts is the Berkshire Garden Center, a unique institution in the world of gardening. Servicing a largely rural area, composed of a number of scattered communities, this center offers a service so worthwhile that its fame has spread far and wide. Naturally, garden centers do not just happen. "It is proposed to start a Garden Center in Berkshire County," read the modest appeal of the first notice that was sent out, and which was signed by six nearby garden clubs-Lenox, Richmond and Northern Berkshire, Richmond Valley, Great Barrington, Pittsfield, and Alford.

Other founder organizations included the Lenox Horticultural Society, the Stockbridge Grange, Stockbridge Library, and The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts. The Berkshires have long attracted an interesting group of people. A background of gardening tradition in the region also, undoubtedly, helped in starting a garden center movement, and there have been a few generous gifts of equipment and money.
